“Are you sure about this?”
“I’m sure. Go ahead.”
Evan shrugged, raised the rifle to his shoulder and pointed it directly at Tom’s head.
Tom’s eyes looked straight down the barrel and didn’t blink.
A shot. A roar. A sound that drowned out every other flutter in the air for the next six seconds.
Evan lowered the rifle and grinned at Tom.
“Not bad, mate. You didn’t blink. And look, that apple’s a goner.”
Tom smiled. “Told ya I wouldn’t flinch.”
Behind his back, Tom crossed his hands to stop them from shaking.
