Familiar — Flash Fiction

Warm and thick, it felt like a sensation she’d grown used to.

Air in her lungs clogged together to make her both gasp and breathe.

Smell of smoke filled her nostrils, from the pot turning black on the stove, blacker than the chicken inside it.

It was an amalgam of emotions- hurt and pain, fear and anger and at some point she couldn’t tell where one ended and where the other began. Like the blood on the floor.

One hand on her face where he’d just hit her and one hand holding the saucepan she’d just used to hit him.
